Civil rights lawyer C. Raphael Davis-Williams is a proud Ohio State Buckeye and Class of 2010 graduate of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Attorney Davis-Williams is the co-founder of The Law Office of Spater & Davis-Williams, LLC located in Columbus, Ohio. He is a Houston, Texas native and had a 14-year career as a television news reporter in Texas, Alabama, and Florida prior to becoming an attorney.
Raphael earned his undergraduate B.F.A. in 1992 in Radio/Television/Film from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Between 2004 and 2006 he completed all of the required course work – absent a thesis – for a Master of Liberal Arts degree with a concentration in government from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Making the most of every opportunity law school presented, Raphael clerked as a Summer Associate for two consecutive summers with the corporate law firm Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff LLP. He also clerked in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio, Criminal Division; and for the Majority Counsel for the Ohio House of Representatives, 128th General Assembly. Raphael won the Federal Bar Association/Columbus Chapter’s 2010 Scholarship which afforded him a unique chance to complete an externship in the chambers of the Honorable Judge Algenon L. Marbley, United States District Court, Southern District of Ohio, Eastern Division.
After earning his J.D. in May 2010, Raphael immediately began fighting to give voice to voiceless and value to the marginalized. Sandy Spater, Raphael’s dear friend and mentor, hired Raphael as an Associate Attorney for the Spater Law Office and Raphael hit the ground running. He co-counseled with Attorney Spater in both a state civil rape trial in August 2010 and a federal police misconduct trial in February 2011. In March 2012, following a devastating diagnosis of pancreatic cancer for Sandy, Raphael and Sandy became partners in The Law Office of Spater & Davis-Williams, LLC.
Community service is a core commitment and tradition of Spater & Davis-Williams. Raphael is a member of the Board of Directors and serves as Deputy General Counsel for the ACLU of Ohio as well as on the Executive Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors and is the immediate past President of the Board for Kaleidoscope Youth Center (kycohio.org), the only LGBTQ* youth center in the state of Ohio dedicated to creating a safe and empowering space for LGBTQ youth ages 12-20.
